Art For Peace Contest

‘ART FOR PEACE’ (ART4PEACE) PROGRAM, 2017-18

Global Peace Alliance, Surrey Society (GPA)

The Art4Peace program uses art to pursue the GPA mission “to empower people and their educational, cultural and other grassroots networks to build and sustain a culture of peace for generations to come”. For this, it promotes and maximises the use of art in all its manifestations: literary, visual, performing, and other.

The program has had great successes in 2015-16 and 2016-17 with increasing numbers of people in all age groups participating and using various creative arts to express their views of peace. Among them were children as young as 5 years and seniors in their eighties. At the same time, the public interest in the program also increased in an escalating manner, with more and more people attending its public events; already more than one thousand people have participated in the program over the last two years.

Literary and Visual Arts Contest:

This is a literary (prose, poetry, drama) and visual arts (drawing, painting, photography, sculpting) contest for all ages, divided into four age groups: 5-12 years, 13-17 years, 18-64 years, and 65 years or more. This contest gives an opportunity to all those within the region who are interested to try out peace-themed literary and/or visual artistic activities in a competitive environment. All participants to the contest get a Certificate of Appreciation, and those among them whose submissions get selected as any of the best three in each art category in each age group also receive a cash prize and a trophy.

The Children’s submissions to this contest (age groups 5-12 years and 13-17 years) are used to develop and annually expand a Dictionary of Peace for the Children by the Children (leading to a language of peace for the young), while the adults’ submissions to the contest get added to a similarly expanding database of peacemaking and conflict transformation ideas and concepts for adults.
