We will have three incredibly talented Artists in Residence this year including Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist/composer Shahzad Ismaily, French saxophonist/flutist Sakina Abdou, and BC’s own DJ O Show 👏 Each will be doing multiple performances at the 2024 Jazz Festival as well as their own Artist Talk at @western_front which are free to attend! The New York Times called Brooklyn-based composer/multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily“ one of music’s most in-demand collaborators, flitting like a mischievous butterfly through genres as diverse as honeyed folk, rambunctious free jazz and spectral meditations sung in Urdu”. Over the last thirty years he’s played all manner of instruments with a diverse crew of artmakers, including Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Feist, Keiji Haino, Ceramic Dog, and more.

French saxophonist/flutist @sakina_abdou_officiel’s multifaceted sound is sometimes caustic, sometimes full of grace and quietude, and always full of suspense and surprise. She’s worked with the likes of Eve Risser, Dedalus, and the Muzzix collective. Of Franco-Nigerian origin, an upcoming collaboration will feature drummers from Niger and flutist Yacouba Moumouni. “She can be as fiery as she is fierce, but what has impressed me is Abdou’s ability to bring moments of swing-derived blowing to the equation, evoking Lee Konitz as much as Peter Brötzmann” (The Quietus).

Passion, positivity, and professionalism make @djoshow one of the most sought-after DJs working today. O Show—a.k.a. Orene Askew—is a proudly Afro-Indigenous, and embraces teachings from both lineages. Winner of the 2022 International Indigenous Hip Hop Award for DJ of the Year, a BC Indigenous Business Award, and Vancouver Pride Society’s StandOut Award, she’s also a powerful speaker who shares knowledge and spreads the positive message that diversity makes beautiful music!

The circus is coming! ⚡️🎪🎷🎸🎻🥁🎹🎺🎤

We are thrilled to announce that our closing night Performance Works show will be the epic 14-piece ensemble Wayne Horvitz Electric Circus!

Led by renowned keyboardist/composer/conductor @waynehorvitz, Wayne Horvitz Electric Circus is a large and charged ensemble that uses sampled grooves, improvised sonic exploration, light projections, and a boatload of talent to reimagine classic soul, funk, rock, and psychedelic. Wayne will lead a stacked 14-piece ensemble featuring French saxophonist Sakina Abdou (@sakina_abdou_officiel) and Brooklyn-based Shahzad Ishmaily (electric bass) alongside local players Nikko Whitworth on acoustic bass (@nikkowhitworth), Meredith Bates on violin (@meredith_bates_music), Kai Basanta on drums (@kaibasanta), Jeff Younger on guitar, Madeleine Elkins on guitar (@rigsofmad), Chris Gestrin on keys (@chrisgestrin), JP Carter on trumpet (@jpcarter_), Nebyu Yohannes on trombone (@nebyoha), Gordy Li on tenor sax (@gordysmurf), Chris Kelly on baritone sax, Jack Duncan on congas/percussion, and Shruti Ramani on vocals (@shrutiramanimusic).

This June 30th show closes out an epic eight nights of incredible artists at Performance Works including Irreversible Entanglements, The Messthetics & James Brandon Lewis, Laraaji, aja monet, Lakecia Benjamin, Ulysses Owens Jr. and Generation Y and We All Break. There’s just over 10 days left for students to apply for the new Vancouver Youth Jazz Orchestra 🎺 The VYJO is a new and free offering for inspired student musicians (Grades 8-12) who want to cultivate their talent alongside professional members of the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra. Up to 21 talented teens are selected from an audition process and rehearse over four weeks in June, culimnating a closing day performance at the Jazz Festival on June 30th! Some mentors involved in this year’s collaboration with the VJO are VYJO bandleader Brent Taylor, VJO artistic director James Danderfer, trumpet mentor Geeta Das, trombone mentor Nebyu Yohannes, and sax mentor Ingrid Stitt.

Applications close April 30th! All instruments welcome (especially alto sax, trombone and bass). This program is co-presented by @coastaljazz, @fmjazzfund and the @vancouverjazzorchestra. Head to our linkinbio to learn more about the programs and how to audition.

Our Granville Island Jazz programming has arrived! 🌊 This year’s lineup features a wonderful array of Festival first timers and seasoned friends of the Festival from June 21 to 30. Afternoon programming at Granville Island is entirely free, with shows at Performance Works from 1:30PM-3:30PM. Here you will find performers like Norway’s leading piano trio Kjetil Mulelid Trio and local Indo-Jazz fusion quartet Raagaverse. Our free Ocean Artworks series starts at 4:00PM on most days and features some fresh faces like a key figure in the Alberta jazz scene drummer Biboye Onanuga and guitarist/composer Sam Wilson who blends finger-style guitar with the far-roving possibilities of jazz improvisation. As well as returning players like organist Chris Gestrin who will be performing the music of the legendary Shirley Scott.

New this year is the addition of three late night free shows at The Revue Stage starting at 11:00PM. Part of our Innovation Series, you can catch some impressive heavyweights in creative music, including an improvised set with French saxophonist/flutist Sakina Abdou, Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist/composer Shahzad Ismaily, and one of the West Coast’s most agile and inquisitive drummers, Dan Gaucher.

PLUS don’t miss our Ocean Artworks evening series. Tickets will only be available at the door.

Highlights include the 23-year-old blues sensation Garret T. Willie (June 21) with a shredding, hard-stomping rock ‘n’ roll blues set. You might recognize Pasquale Grasso from his set with Samara Joy in 2022. Known as one of the best guitar players on the jazz scene today, Pasquale performs his own set (June 30) with André Lachance and Andrew Millar.

Our 2024 Downtown Jazz series is going to be full to the brim with fun danceable grooves–from traditional jazz to blues, from Latin-influenced experimental rock to hip hop🕺✨ Pitchfork calls drummer Kassa Overall “one of modern jazz music’s most audacious futurists”. Blue Moon Marquee just won the JUNO for Blues Album of the Year. You may recognize Odario (or maybe his voice) from his late night show on CBC called Afterdark. The season finale of Unwritten Thursdays is coming up on April 18th at Tyrant Studios with the theme City Poems ✍️ Seasoned jazz performers will improvise music to accompany four acclaimed local spoken word artists as they perform pieces inspired by the city. Fiona Tinwei Lam, Vancouver’s 6th poet laureate, and the author of 3 collections of poetry and a children’s book, hosts. Co-presented by @coastaljazz and @barkingsphinx. Tickets at the 🔗in bio.
